CHAPTER 16

JUNIPER

“Who is it?”

Georgia’s voice was muffled through the door.

“It’s not a wolf,” Juniper said back.

“Good,” said Georgia. “Think I’ve gotten enough wolf for one day.”

Juniper opened the door to the small but cozy bedroom, the windows looking out over downtown Graham and the mountains beyond. The sun was beginning to set over the mountains, the sky orange and white all around it.

Georgia was on the bed on her back, looking up at the ceiling. Juniper stepped into the room and shut the door behind her. Juniper took a seat on the edge of the bed and put her hand on her sister’s ankle.

“How are you holding up?” asked Juniper.

“Hard to say,” she said. “Between getting pulled out of my life with only a minute to process it and then seeing two bears get murdered in front of me, I’m not sure exactly where to start with the trauma.”

“I’m...I’m sorry,” said Juniper. “This is all my fault, I know it.”

Georgia sat up, a serious expression on her face.

“No,” she said. “I don’t blame you for this. I mean it’s shitty, but in the back of my head I knew that someday our life in Hastings would have to end sooner or later. But part of me thought that at least you’d be taken care of.”

“Bryce hardly took care of me,” she said. “He was cruel and controlling and...”

“And what?” asked Georgia, concern in her voice.

“He started to get abusive,” she said. “That’s what finally did it.”

“Oh my God,” said Georgia, placing her hand on Juniper’s shoulder. “That...that fucker! I’ll rip his little balls off for hurting you!”

Juniper couldn’t help but smile at her sister’s enthusiasm. But there was more to the story, and she knew that it was time to tell her about it.

“But that’s not all,” she said.

“What?” asked Georgia. “What more could there be? He was abusive and you left. As far as I’m concerned, that’s enough.”

“It’s wasn’t just about me,” said Juniper.

She took a deep breath, closed her eyes, and spoke.

“It’s that...I’m pregnant.”

Georgia’s eyes went wide.

“You’re what?”

“Pregnant. With triplets.”

Georgia shot up off the bed and began pacing the room.

“Holy shit,” she said. “Holy shit! You’re freaking preg...”

Juniper bolted off the bed and put her hand over Georgia’s mouth.

“Don’t say it that loudly!” she said, her eyes wide with fear. “OK?”

Georgia appeared shocked, but soon nodded her head.

“Are you going to keep quiet if I take my hand off your mouth?”

Another nod.

Juniper removed her hand and Georgia stayed stunned for a moment before speaking.

“You’re...wow...”

“Yep,” said Juniper.

“And it’s –they’re- Bryce’s?”

“They are,” she said. “Kind of.”

“’Kind of’?” asked Georgia. “Oh my God, that means...”

“They’re not claimed.”

Georgia fell back onto the bed, stunned at what she’d just heard.

“That means that you’re an unclaimed omega with three unclaimed kids inside you,” she said. “June, that means you’re the most valuable shifter in the entire fucking state!”

“I know, I know,” she said. “And that’s why I have to leave. When Bryce put his hands on me I had no idea what I was going to do, but I knew I had to get away from him.
